Healing Skin Ointment

Classrooms Across Cultures has been asked to return to Ghazni and help women create healthy skin salve. In April 2008, our goal is to help the women start a small business to manufacture this salve and sell it in Afghanistan and the United States.

History of the Salve

Camilla Barry taught teachers how to make skin salve while in Ghazni in 2005. This salve uses natural herbs found in Afghanistan. We steeped the herbs in olive oil, strained them and added local beeswax to the olive oil. The beeswax comes from a beekeeper in Ghazni and olive oil can be obtained from a factory in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

Teachers reported that the salve quickly became a "must-have" in Ghazni! Its effectiveness against a variety of skin ailments made it very popular and teachers from the training began giving it away; then selling it to friends.

"Please Return to Teach Us Again!"

In November 2007 the past Minister of Education from Ghazni traveled to the U.S. and met with Camilla Barry. She urged us to return and help them recreate this salve. "Its use has become wide-spread in Ghazni, but we need further instruction. Can you teach us about more herbs?"

Plans for 2008

We need money to buy olive oil, beeswax and containers. Addtional money will help us print labels. Your donations of money, time or marketing expertise will help make this happen.
